THERMAL AND VOLCANIC ACTIVITY
IXTKItESTIXO DKVKI.OPMUXTS OX Bl'APElll'. # IVV PI'OSS Association. Auckland, April 17. ' Tin- llaolihi correspondent ol' Hi. Herald telegraphs that an inlercsiiu',' change Ins tiiki'ii place ill lh'.' appearance of lliiiipi'liu Mountain. Yesterday (hi' nxiiinliiin was rappi'il with snow, lint this morning it was seen to have
lost its whiteness, mill hi'i-omi' of a bluish grey color. There is nothing whatever to explain this extraordinary transformation, hut the fact, that an croptioii lias evidently occurred somewhere on lh.' mountain. II is considered mo.-l probable that the hot lake on the eastern side of ltiinpchu, which has rcccnlly been inore than misuallv active, has, in stead of sending up clouds of sleam only, caused an uplieaval of something more .siihslaiilial. It h Muicelv likely Unit the Xgarualme volcano is the cause of Ihe li'iuilib. if being several miles away and much lower than liuapi'lm. During the past two months, Xgaruhee has
hi'i'ii vi'i-v active, throwing ashes and mud In a' i-oiisiilei-iihle height. The lake on lluapehu has also at intervals emitted clouds of steam, on several occasions tremendous volumes of steam issuing above th-.' mountain top. Heavy rumbling explosions have frequently been heard at Ohakimc, presumably from
Xgarualioe. At. the present time the iiiountaiu is partly hidden by rain clouds, future events are a.waited with much interest by residents.
