SPORTING.

MAXAIA .RACES. (By our Special Reporter). The annual meeting of the Manaia llack Racing Club was held on Wednesday, in glorious weather. The attendance was fair. Ten bookmakers paid the fee to plv their calling, and appeared to do good business. As few favorites got, home, the pencillers no doubt hail the better of the game. In many of the events tile fields were good. In the District Handicap, however, only three contestants went to the post, but it. is expected that next veal' the fields will be much larger. The Club only' recently decided to include the race in the programme, and consequently there was hardly snllicienl time to prepare horses for the event. At (he conclusion of the race, Mr D. Hughes, senr., presented bracelets to the riders of the firsl and second horses. The Ciub would he considering their own interests, mid would no doubt receive much larger patronage if the races were arranged to finish half-an-hour earlier. This could easily be managed by doing away with (lie long delays between tile event-. This matter will probably be

considered before the next meet ins comes round. For a young club the ollicinis deserve great praise for the manner in which everything was eavvied out. The raees were started punctually to time. Some very close fin'rdies were witnessed. Vollowiwr ale (he details < f the racing:—
