PROVINCIAL NEWS.
(From Our Owu Oorersponuents.) OKATO. . The event of the season is to take place next Tuesday, April 9th, when everybody, from grandfather to the baby, is going to the sports to see the football tournament between the schoolboys and the seven-aside matches. Good nominations have been received for the running, chopping, wrestling and jumping events. The refreshment booth is in the hands of the committee. In the evening it is anticipated that Hempton Hall, notwithstanding its great size, will be taxed to hold the dancers and lovers of song. A good supper will be provided, and the music will be in the hands of Mr D. Patterson.
WAREA. The cricket match with Carrington load was played at Okato on Easter Monday in fair weather. The scores were not very large. The Carirngton Road team Avon by 01 to 27 runs. One of the Carrington Road players made 38 out of the total score. The biggest score on orir side was made by Bruce Anderson, who notched seven. Both teams were pleased with the day's outing. Warea purposes returning the match shortly. The I'uniho school picnic was held in Mr ileury Corbett's paddock on Easter Monday. There was a fair attendance of children and their parents. A dance was held in Mr Gibbon's old store in the evening, and a good time was spent by all. A meeting of the Cricket Club was held on Thursday night. Mr N. 11. Watt scut in his resignation as captain of the club. The secretary was instructed to write and ask him to reconsider his decision. Mr C. 11. King's resignation was accepted. Mr B. An- ■ derson was elected a new member. Three matches are on the tapis. New books, numbering 40, were selected by Messrs A. Corbett and T. E. Larking in New Plymouth for the library, which now numbers 400 volumes. The library is to be enlarged.
TABIKI. '< ; ; , The tenders have closed for the erection of a cheese factory here. Mr Bond, of New Plymouth, was the successful tenderer, out of eleven. A special train arrived at Tariki yestorday from Masterton with, the stock and furniture of Mr i'raser, who recently bought Mr Michael Zimmerman's farm on the Tariki road. Mr .Tno. Jameson, of this district, has started bee-farming, receiving yesterday a dozen more hives to add to his present stock. Mr Thos. West has sold his farm on the Tariki road at a very satisfactory figure. The horticultural show was a great .success, financially and otherwise, eclipsing all previous shows here. At a meeting of the school committee last week some of the principal discussion concerned the agitation for an enlarged playground at the school. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Trimble, Monkhouse, Morison and Kennedy for the manner in which they had backed the committee's application for an additional five acres of land.
