COLLISION IN AUCKLAND HARBOR

A collision occurred near the ltaihvay wharf at 4 o'clock til's morning between the Northern Company's steamer Kaliieri, inward liound, from Whangare:, anil the auxiliary keleli Dawn, boun.l wi.ii a. sundry cargo for l'iako. Cantain T. Meyers was in charge of the Kiinieri, and Captain Jv-lly in charge of the ])avn. The latter had rounded the wharf when it was perceived that the Kanicri was coming directly towards her. The captain of .lie Dawu imcdintcly reversed the engines, and it it appears the Kanieri's skipper did the same. The collision, however, could not l.e averted, and llie Kane ri .-truck the Dawn amidships, making a whole in iicr side extending from tiled eck to a little helow the water-line. Five planks were stove in, and the whole left in tile sale of the cutter was ahout 2 feet lull!!. The Kanieri's cn;_'ine- were going astern at the time of (he collision; otherwise the ketch would have lieen more seriously damaged. A quantity of wnler found its way into the Dawn's hold, and Captain Kelly deeMed lo return to the wharf, so thai an exuni'nation of the damage could /he made. The cargo was shifted, and the damaged part of the vessel being thus brought out of the water, she ceased to leak.
