Tarauaki County Council's application for a grant towards the cost of metalling the eastern portion of the Tariki road met with a straight out refusal. The Premier, however, in answer to Mr. \Y. T. Mr. J. Downes. warder at the New Plymouth gaol, leaves for Christchurch on Thursday morning, taking with him a splendid model of St. .Mary's Church, to which he is now adding tjie finishing touches. The model is of plaster of paris, of stone-grey color, and every window other than the memorial windows, and every little detail of the exterior are faithfully reproduced. When Mr. 11. Coodacre was at the Exhibition recently, engaged in the judging of the exhibits of leather and leather goods, he was instrumental in having the New Plymouth Sash and Door Company's splendid fancy woodwork exhibits entered for competition. Advice has now been received that a gold medal has been awarded, Mr. Coodacre also had Mr. E. M. Smith's ironsand and steel exhibits, and the Petroleum Company's displays entered for competition in their respective classes, but it is not yet known with what success.
