CHAMPIONSHIP BELT. WON BY ARTHUR BALLINGER. Trentiiam, March G. During the afteruoon the Championship was decided. Amongst those present were the Hon. Mr Hall-Jones, Hon Mr McNal) and Hon. Mr Carroll. Arthur Ballingcr, of Wellington, who had a lead of six points as they went down for the final stage, maintained his advantage, and now holds the belt as his priyate property. In 1872 tho lato Capt. Walls, of Dunediu, won the belt outright; first scoring a win in Napier and following this up with a victory at Auckland in the following yoar. Following is the result of tho Championship:— A. Ballmgcr, Petone 461 Duncan, Denniston 433 Drummond, Dannevirke 451 Mills, Duncdin 447 ffadfield, Blenheim 446 Cooper, Palmerston North ... 440 W. Ballinger, Petone 410 BreingaD, Gisbornc 440 Cameron, Opaki 410 Moslem, Kaco ... ... 445 Marenzi, Eketahuna .114 Perrin, Linton 444 King, Opaki 444 Wilkie. Upper Hutt 444 Drummond, Cameron and Brcignau tied for the Rille Challenge Clip, which to the highest scorer in this stage, and in tho fire off Drummoni won.
The Hon, Hall-Jones congratulated the winners, and said New Zealand would be represented in a match against the Englismen and Australia. Mr McNab and Mr Carroll also addressed the men, the latter hoping and expressing the opinion that the colony should be represented each year at Bislcy.
[The winner of the Belt, Rifleinnn Arthur Ba'.lingcr, a member of the Pctone Rifles, is one of tho most consistent and able shots in the colony. He has won the Belt three times—in 181)2 and 1897~and has also represented the colony at Bisley and Australian meetings. He and his brother are probably the most remarkable pair of brothcrs-in-ariiis in any part of the world. Both brothers have taken pirt in every championship meeting since 1878, in which year the elder brothar, William, won the championship. In 1895, at Trentham, there occurred the remarkable coincidence of the two brothers scoring the same number of marls foi first place. In tho shoot oil: Arthur registered almost the possible number of points, and all 1 present behoved the Belt was his, but Ins brother took up his rifle and put on, if we remember right, the possible —a unique performance, W. H. Balliuger, who is 47 years of age, therefore has two wins to his credit. The present holder of the Holt, Arthur Balliuger, is 40 years of age J
