SUICIDE AT MATAPU.
I'OUNti JIAJi SHOOTS HIMSELF. Our Normauby correspondent writes that on Monday morning Constable Clout-ton, stationed at Normanby, received word that a young man named William Butterworth, aged about 25 years, had shot himself in a paddock on Mr IX McCartcn's farm, on the Hustings road, near Malapu. Mr McCarten heard a shot, tired about daylight, but no suspicion was aroused. Later on when one of the employees was going for the cows, lie found the body, quite dead, with the upper portion of the head shot away, and a gun lying alongside. Deceased had evidently placed the muzzle of the gun 'to his forehead, using a piece of siring to pull the trigger. I)i- Sloan was immediately summoned, lmt could only pronounce life extincl. The body was removed to tliu Nonnuiiby HolJcl to await the iii.|uc-t which will be held to-day (Tuesday). Deceased, so far as is known, was a .stranger to Die district, and has relatives redding at Vew Plymouth and Waitotara.
