VOGELTOWN STREET LIGHTING
SUBURBAN LOCAL BODIES. llie question of lighting the streets at Vogeltown came under the notice of the Taranaki County Council on Monday, when Ml- Jl' Lashbrook, chairman. and Mr T. JJlanchett, secretary, to the Carrington Boad Board, asked the Council to take stops to have Victoria road at Vogeltown, lighted at a cost of about £4O per annum, and stop the amount out of the Board's annual subsidy.
Mr Andrew's asked who would hear tlie initial cost. Mr lilanchett said the Gas Company and the liorough Couneil had alrcad'v made preparations fur the supple »t lighting, but the ratepayers had'not yet decided on 'the nature of tlie i|luminant. lit reply to questions, the deputation said this same reipiost was preferred when the formation of a suburban borough had been thcatened. Cr. Hill said he would not support any more grants to road boards, such as were made last year. Other Councillors concurred. The deputation having retired.
C|-, Tate said the time had come for taking the ratepayers nunc into the euulideuce of the (Jouncil, inr it seemed that the county was going to ]>• so sub-divided as to entail a great loss of revenue. They had heard of the movement lo form a Kitzroy town d'strlcl. but be was sure that if the Fit/.roy people were shown their true position and their probable liabilities, they li'oulfl pot be so anxious for severance. They could not know the actual cost of maintenance. o( the main road there, nor were they aware that it would probably need renewing this year. Last year the Council had given grants to these suburban boards. They had been threatened with the formation of a suburban 'borough, and '.the ivhoJe district seemed to be on the move. Good may be done' by taking over and maintaining pieces of road in those districts where there ivas' no county road noiv. It was continually being mooted that the Moa ruling was to be made a separate county. If all those new bodies were formed, what- was to become of the county? The suburban ratepayers deserved eons'deration. and they should get it. lie suggested a meeting of tlie ratepayers, with a representative of the Couneil pi-e="'it to arraii 0 « ; omething on a penua„eia basis.
The chairman could not see how anything permanent could be arrived at. County roads would not slop secession as the Fitzroy movement proved. He supposed the movers in Ihe Vitzroy town district scheme had made all enquiries, and satisfied them-elve> of ihe financial prospects. Cr. T''te said Ije knew the h v tzrov people were Mveding dc.-pite Ihe fact ihnt thov had exceptional treatment from the Council.
Cr. llopsim said I lie l''itzruy jkmijil _• had liecu well frcatcil. Cr. Ilill: llifjht royally trcalcO. Cr. .Vndrcws said these Caninfitiin road ]iooplc were only asking for their own, withuul any cost lo (lie Council. Cr. Aillani said the people liail granted J''it/.roy folk I'ootjiatlis. li.L'hlil and a. fire brigade suhsidy. and now "away 1 hey JJO,'' lie ui.ned that the matter slmuld lie deferred for further consideration.
I C. Tate, seconded, and 'this course was adopted. Cr. Tate then moved Hint. Hie clin.ii'mun convene a meotins' of ratepayers in the "I'llzroY hall in connection with the propo-eil severance, lie was sure the ratepayers there liad 110 idea of tlie prolialile cost of l'ond maintenanee. tile uiaitileu.iitee of the Waiwa Irailio liridffe. and so forlli.
