And it occurred to nic that man lias, on his part, a serious and wei-hty grievni.ee against the whole annua', kingdom in general, ami surelv ii is high time that some individual, with higher notions 'than mothers' meetngor afternoon teas, should use and devise! some means of proteVtln':' man against the unwarranted attacks of .Nature's wastrels, the, Leasts of the fields, who meet, oftentimes, our true kind-heartedness and whole-souled benevolence with (ferocity ami mendacity [ beyond all reason. Man, or most of him, is after all a puny thing, a frail structure of llesh and bone; and Nature, in its unreasonableness, gave to tho brute, strength and stature, fear k-ssness and wickedness, therewith to tight the battle of life, and well has he been equipped. Not a day passe, that we do not read or hear of instances of .shocking cruelty and mendacious wrong by these fearless animals, these embodiments of Nature's fiendish cruelty let loose upon this vale of trouble: and these are the villainous creatures .which weaklings persuade their intellects, rerjuire protection. ...
