A TERRIBLE VENGEANCE.
A French woman named Lepoivre. wreaked a terrible vengeance o.i her fate employer's wife at Versailles. She had been living as the house-keep-er of a butcher named Joseph Berget, who two years ago divorced his wife. Last month the butcher met his former wife, and took her back to live with him. Mine Lepoivre was in consequence turned out. She dressed herself in the blue and gold uniform of a gas inspector, and, carrying her own clothes under the loose cloak work by the inspectors, went to the Berget's home. . She rang the bell and asked Mine. Berget, who opened the loor, to show her the gas meter While pretending to examine the meter she dropped a screw. Mine. Berget. stooped to pick it up, wrereupon the sham inspector poured a bottle of alchol over her head and lighted it with a match. Mme. Berget, who be came in a instant a mass of flames, shrieked for help. Her two iittle who rushed iu from the next room, were badly hurt in trying to help their mother. The little boy, a child aged four, will probably not recover. Mme. Berget's screams were heard by the neighbours, who rushed in to Hnd the kitchen was ablaze. Witn difficulty some of them cxt'nguished the tlames, while others attended to the injured woman and children. Meanwhile Mme. Lepoivre had slipped up to a room 011 the top (loor, and there changed into her woman'* ciothes. Half an hour later >he walked calmly downstairs, but she was -topped by the concierge, who knew she had reason to hate Mme. Bergcl. She was arrested <>n the arrival of the police, and she makes no secret of her crime."
