THE PREFERENCE DEBATE
A NOTABLE EXAMPLE. London, February 22. One point in Sijr Gilbert Parkerfs speech is attracting notice. He pointed out that when, in 1860, the late Mr (Madstone made a treaty with France preference to the Cape was withdrawn, and the Cape's export of wine to Great Britain dropped immediately from .WOO.OOO to £17,000, and to-day wa» insignificant. It was Ireajsfrmable t> suppose that if preference had been maintained Britain might now be importing a million's worth. The Rght Hon. D. Lloyd-Gcorgo (President of the Board of TradokL commenting on Mr Balfour's, Sir Gil-t bert Barker's and Mr Hills' suggestions, asked whether thee were seriously restricted to proposals to reduce the duty on wine and found the Empire on pippins.
