DISPOSAL OF REFUSE.
At the liorough Council meeting on Monday night, Cr. Monlenlh moved, according to notice, lual the j.raclice of depositing town refuse on -Mount Ijryau plantation reserve lie discontinued. Jle said tin; practice was a puuiic nuisance., more particularly to res idcllts of the localltv; IHe stench at limes was abominable, ami a menace to health in a fairly thickly populated portion of the borough. Jle would not favour placing the new depot within the borough at all. The mayor said he had ascertained that the cost of a destructor was beyond tin: means of the Council. lie understood a situ could be obtained outside the borough. J'.ut it was impossible to close the present depot, until another was obtained. Cr liutehcn moved and the Mayor seconded an amendment, that, it" is inadvisable that the practice of depositing rubbish within the boroush be continued. This was carried, and, on liiie suggestion of Cr. Webster, enquiries are to be made with a view to acquiring a site. Dealing with Hie question of a rubbish destructor, Mr Kendall reported that it wan impossible to correctly estimate tiie quality of rubbish 'tha' would be provided for a destructor, but probably the average would be from one to two tons per ilav. lie had Ixvmi unsuccessful in hiy' ell'orts to locate n new site. .Mr Kendall suggested ,111 arrangement with the .Railway Department to have the rubbish shot into an old truck on a sid iiig at the back of (lie gasworks, the idea being to take it out to the'harbour and tip the refuse over the end of the breakwaler. This suggestion failed to find favour with the Council.
