CRIMINALS IN THE PULPIT.
New York, December 10. fc A new style of mission is arousing '.great interest in New York. A band of fervid preaeiiers from the Bowery slums, a converted thief who had spent fifteen years in prison, two converted street rullians, and two converted drunkards, were invited bv (!,,. p ;u ( 0 , of St. Nicholas' Church, Fifth Avenue to occupy his church pulpit and conduct a series of revivalist services f.ll the purpose of stimulating the faith ol his congregation. The peculiar interest of the move ment lies in tile character of the Si Nicholas congregation. The beautiful little church occupies a positior in ! the midst of a district of residential palaces, and the congregation iderived almost exclusive;v from families of prominence in society, linn net and commerce.
To such a congregation, clad in rich furs, tile Bowery missionaries made impassioned appeals to amend their ways. The ex-thief exhorted the financiers upon honest v, the ev-dniuk-anls told impressively the evils of drink, painting f,,,- the edification of the fur-clad ladies tiie terrible pictures the speakers had witnessed as the results of intemperance among women. Tiie church mis been crowded for these services, ami the worthy congregations have been deeply impressed. "
