CRICKET

M.C.C. V. WEST COAST. Per Press Association. Greymouth, January 11. There was glorious .weather far the opening day of the cricket match, West Coast v. Marylcbone Cricket Club, Which was played tills afternoon in the presence of a large crowd. Ihe pitch was in splendid order, the matting making bowling very f«st» and the Englishmen played 12 men and West Coast 18. West Coast won the toss and elected to bat, Smith ami Barlow taking the wickets, and Curwen opened the. bowling. The start was disastrous, one wicket falling for two runs, two for four runs, and three for 10. Turner joined Barlow and brought the score to 51 before he retired. The sixth fell at 57, and 73 was reached before the next wieket went. Ihe underarmers of Simpson-Hayward quite baffled the batters, while Harrison and Douglas did good work with the fast baJls? The fielding was excellent, and not a mistake was made. The Coast team batted well. The. score would have been considerably larger if the field had been at all faulty. The last wicket fell at live minutes to six o'clock for a total of 132. ihc scores are:— N. Harlow, b Hayward ~. JU J. Smith, b Douglas 0 C.
