TARANAKI TENNIS TOURNAMENT.

THIRD DAY.

There was again lovely weather on Monday for the third day of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association's annual tournament on the. New Plymonth courts. The lawns were in splendid order. The various games were watched by a goodly gathering of spectators, and the play was generally of a very interesting nature, many of the games reaching the win ning stage. The men's championship singles again fell to A. G. Wallace, the holder of the challenge cup for the year just closed. His last game in this competition was pluved a gainst Dr. Keith, hut the Anck'hiiidcr was palpably tired, the result of two davs' hard tenuis without the necessary condition. The match was to the hest in live sets, u „d Wallace won the first three. o—l. ii_2, t i— i the; third witnessing a tremendous ell'ort on Keith's part to notch a win. Wallace, however, was in capital form, and wore his opponent down completely. Victory went to the Tarn, naki representative in the ladies' championship singles, Hiss Powdrcll winning from Miss Udy, of Auckland. -Miss Udy had qualified for the final by her defeat of Miss Gray in a line lobbing game. Her opponent, a champion at the nets, found the singles too much for her, Miss I'dy making play to the hack of the courts. The final saw some exciting rallies, the second set going to 7—5 before a decision was announced, the figures runniii" 4-3 -i-4, 4-5, 5-5, (i-5, 7-5. But Miss Powdrell's all-round plav was too good, and she won o—2, 7—5, fj—l. -Miss Gray, an Auckland' player, who had just completed six davs'" play in the big tournament at Christchurch. won the ladies' handicap simMes a well-deserved win. Willi Miss Udy she was also successful m the championship doubles, defeating .Misses Thomson and Ucrry in the final xii" Aucklanders are well paired, sharimthe back line and net work naturally -Miss Gray playing best close to the net. Miss Powdrell and Dickie put up a great light in the last games for the combined championship Doubles, and succeeded in retaining the championship. Miss Gray and l'carse ,tlie run-ners-up, were very little inferior. After a sturdy ami plugging g iU ne, Dl . i-ookes vanquished Dr. Keith in the fourth round of the men's handicap singles, and soon afterwards took the court against l'carse in the final. The latter was giving away points, and caught the local man at 80, but the hitter kept hard at it, and improved his play and his position, eventually snatching victory at (iO-58. Dickie and Wallace won the men's handicap doubles comfortably from Medley and Weir. The struggle of the day was in the final for the men's championship doubles, where Wallace and Uiekie, the present holders, laid to do battle against Dr. Keith and Grossman. Dr. Keith had made a line recovery from his semi coillapsc in the morning, but nevertheless it was seen the local men had all the advantage of ■."Uillltiou. Knowing how deadly were their opponents 01l "anything |traight," the Auckland pair played a
