His bonhomie and kindly consideration for everyone has endeared him to a large circle of people, who join with us, we feel sure, in wishing him good luck and Godspeed in his new sphere of work.

Mr Bradshaw Dive was unanimously elected chairman of the recently constituted Eltham County at the first meeting of Councillors on Saturday.

Miss Narelle was welcomed to New Plymouth on Saturday by His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. Doekrill), Rev. J. F. McManus, Dr. and Miss McCleland, Messrs J. J, Sullivan, and Herd. The honor of making the first ascent of Mt. Egmont this season belongs to Messrs G E. Bannister, J. A. Neame, and J.iS.Lomas (of Wanganui College), who, under the direction of Mr Morris, of the North Egmont Mountain House, safely reached the summit on Saturday. A cable message from Melbourne announces the death of the Rev. Dr. Rainy, Principal sinco 1874 of New College, Edinburgh (Free Church of, Scotland). Dr. Rainy was on a tour of'the colonies for the benefit of his health, but was seriously ill on his recent arrival in Australian waters. He [never subsequently rallied, -and passed peacefully away yesterday. Dr. Rainy would have been 82 years of age on New Year's Day. Mr Joseph Devlin, M.P., the Home Rule envoy who is at present delivering eloquent lectures on this allabsorbing Irish question throughout the colony, arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday evening, and was met and welcomed by the representatives of the United Irish League, and Father McManus. Dr. McCleland,W. T.Jennings, M.H.R., Messrs J. J. Sullivan, and D. O'Brien. Mr Devlin subsequently attended Miss Nareiie's song recital and bad supper with the company, leaving for Auckland by the Takapuna at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, several local gentlemen seeing him off. Mr Devlin does not speak again until his New Plymouth meeting on the Bth January in the Theatre Royal.

Tlio ltev, W. R. Woolley, who has resigned the pastorate of the Gill street Baptist Church, was entertained at a largely attended and representative social gathering on Friday night, and was presented with a life-size photograph, handsomely framed, of himself, surrounded by the committee. Mrs Woolley also was presented with an elaborate dressing case on behalf of the ladies. Yesterday the Rey. Mr; Woolley preached his farewell sermons to good congregations morning and evening. In the afternoon he addressed the scholars of the Sunday schools. In the eyeping he preached from the " Epistle to the Ephesians on the Riches of Christ," and at the close spoke feelingly on the subject of his departure. The new hymn books were used for the first time with much appreciation. Mrs Percy Hoby as an offertory solo sang 11 Consider the Lilies."
