HOKITJKA'S TROUBLES.
Per Press Association. Hokitika, December 7. At a meeting of the Borough Council to-night, a strong resolution was passed against- the Railway Depart Client altering the one-day overland service so that Hokitika was cut out uf the benelit of the service, except on Saturday of each week. The Jiayor and councillors spoke in condemnatory terms of the action. l f or years the people of the district had been agitating''for an improved service, and so\v it had been stopped without, adequate trial. It was pointed out that the latest change \v«s done in the interest of the Ureymouth evening paper, and the whole Southern ditrict had to sulier. 13y a simple readjustment of the time-table it would be possible to serve all interests, and avoid passengers for Hokitika spending fifteen | hours in Ctreymoutk when only 24 j miles from their- destination.
The Council received eight tenders for the water supply scheme, three of which were below the engineer's estimate. Consideration was adjourned for 10 days, in response to a ratepayers' deputation, which urged the acquirement of a largev water supply, to be used along the route, foi; mining and power purposes,
