COLLEGE EDUCATION.
INSPECTOR-GENERAL'S REPORT. Per Press Association. Wellington, December 5. Reporting on the City Colleges, the lnepeotoivGeneral of Schools reports witji references to Wellington College that there are now fewer inefficient boys than on former visits, yet he considers the proportion larger than desirable. Work in mathematics nas been rnoro concrete and practical, but the teacning of English, Latin, French, and German did not rise above fair, The earnestness of the masters and boys in science was noteworthy, but with few exceptions there was not a sound condition, which he attributed to the conditions under which the work was done, there not being sufficient laboratories. Referring to th e girls' college, he notes apparent good results from modern methods of teaching languages, but science is handicapped the same a 6 in the boys' college. Speaking generally, ho complains of a practice which is common throughout the colony, of attempting to U-ach two strange languages at a time to pupils who do not remain long enougli to master either. In tins ie»pect, he thinks, parents are as much to blame as the teachers. The existence of a department be.ow standard V. is of doubtful bonefit, and Mr Hogben doubts if the department is self-supporting, as required by the Act. The salaries of assistants are too low, and efficiency must suffer from this in the long run.
