RAILWAY DEATH TRAPS.
A few weeks ago a man was drowned whi.st, crossing a river in the Slratlimoie district. At the inquwi a rider was added to the effect that the Government was responsible for not having the river bridged. The Government has now voted a sum of money t amounting 10 somewhere about £3OO for tho building of the bridge, provided the Stratford County Council will find a similar amount. There is now available a sum of £6OO for tile purposo of putting a bridge over thai' river.
Yesterday, at a railway crossing almost opposite tile Midhirst factory, a train ran into a milk cart. The cart was smashed up and the milk spilt. In addition, the driver, a Mr Shoewet er, was badly shaken. It was a narrow escape. Now, had the accident resulted fata.ly, we should probably have had another inquest and another rider to tho effect that the Government was held responsible, and then we might have the banks lowered at this point so that an app.oaching train may be seen and heard from a iutle distance off. There is another crossing a few chains farther north at which a fatal accident will yet occur. The train tmergts from a cutting for a short space and then dips into another cuttng. The iine hero cresses the road in tho middle of a nasty turn. There are records of many narrow oscapes, particularly on wet and boisterous mornings like Tuesday, but it wili doubt.ess require a fatal accident to make the Government realise there the danger.
