WEST'S PICTURES AND THE BRESCIANS.
West's pictured have achieved such a leputanon tnat the big audience and tlie well-pleased audience at the Treatre Royal on Monday night were quite a foregone conclusion, and to Mr U'o-i's credit be it said that he acted right up to his reputation, producing one of the finest entertainments" that .has ever vi ited the town. At enormous expense a splendid collection of films lias been brought together from all part; of the world, in ill! countries and climes, and the first selection of the.o was submitted last night. The series of naval studies, di'P cting the meeting of the French and British at Bte : t, and the bluejackets forming living words of welcome to France and the French Admiral were an apt illustration of l'entente cordiale. Scenes in Fiji and Samoa included the Fijian famous fire-walking- and many phases of Wand life that told more than Cook could tell. A trip to the Paris Zoo was succeeded by a magnificent series of Spain's national pastime, bullfighting., thrilling- in the extreme. Italian cavalry manoeuvres were the subject of some mo t interesting films, and some splendid humorous seis completed the first part of the progianime. "The Btvseian." were entrusted with the second part., and gave a rattling concert programme. ail excellent k-nor voice, earned a recall for his song, "Come Back to Me," responding- with "Dawn." Mi' Rudall Ilavwai'd, the Misses Domenica, Antonia, and Adelina Martinego, and Mr Fred Mills all contributed items that ranked high in the ladder of merit', and each member was rer;; Mr Mills' humorous sketch oi courtship and marriage brought down the house. Then the living picture; resumed, the first series giving some excellent repreof the feats of xierforming bears. Then the audience was transported to the northern .-.horns of North America, where the ice for iced drinks was collected from the frozen lakes, ■ tored and shipped lo southern countries. _ This was a splendid series. full of in-truction and interest. A peep at Bo.stock and W'ombwell's menagerie on tour, showing' mane -ide lights Oil circus life, daring feat's in the wild beasts'- capos, and so on, was well worlh the amount paid at Hit. doors. Back in warmer climates we viewed the magnificent carnival at Nice, ;l n«l then followed Dick Turpui in his f anion* ide to York, two films t.iat curpsis' ed any shewn here.
"Anything for Peace'' and "G.iol Birds ' were trick laughter-provoking collections that created roars of laughter, in the middle of which the piegramme concluded. The pic tures were unusually brilliantly illuminated. and there was 110 flicker.
TO-NIGHT. To-night the principa films concern "Canada as it is." a most interesting study of life and progress in a great and growing colony. A patriotic film deals with an'incidenl of the late Zulu rebellion, "How thp British Bulldogs Saved the Union Jack." Patrons are reminded of way's matinee.
