MAKETAWA.
FROM OUk OWN CORRESPONDENT. The fine weather ua= enabled Mr J. Parry, the contractor for altc-iing the grade of the road approaching the lactory to make good progress with dia work. Supp hrs to tne factory begin to quake wnen the mornings become overcast, being fully aware of the treat in store should a heavy downpour occur while the woik is in its present soft state. Given a few more fine days the new metal will be down and both conuactor and suppliers and other users of the road will deem them>e vts fortunate if tire \veather docs keep up. The plain and tancy dre-s ball ncld in the Norfolk road «ehool on the 23rd last, the proceeds of which were in aid of the organ fund was not la rgely attended, the threatening appearance 3 f the weat.ier no doubt preventing a large attendance. Amongst ihos'-- in fancy dress I noticed: Miss M. Wisnew.ki ("Flower Girl"), MUs A. Aekland (-Red Cross Nurse"), Miss Marv Mather ('Highland La-sie' - ), Mr \\. Feakins CSaii--01''), and Messrs F. Stephens and H. Minchm "Maketawa Footballers"). Miss L. Richards suppliol the mu-ic and Mr Joe Burgess acted as M.C. The supper, which was provided by the ladies, was much appreciated. It is a great pity that tiiese social functions, a plea-ant break to the monotony of cow-punching, are not he'd more frequently, and al-o better patronised, as. generally, -he funds are u: b fit the schoolchildren one way U [ an'.ther.
On Monday v v.ning, at the Norfo'k nad school, between eighteen and tu-inty person' interested in ambulance work attended a lecture bv the local sch-o ma ter (Mr R'. Thomas). Al. ("-.-at were greatly pleased and \. :. .1 the opinion that a deal of gcwl v.ould result from these clas-es if ta-.y were bed more often.
Miss Urquait is, I u 1 der,ia,id, under orders 1.1 prnrcd to bt.aaoid, and that Miss Finuerty, at present in charge of the Durham road school, will take her place after Ist December Mr Thos. Wheeler, of Durham road, over a week ago met with a painful accident to his knee and is still confined to his bed. It appears that he was putting milk cans into his cart when the horse moved on, causing him to fail and severely twist his knee joint. \V« all wish to see him abo t scon.
People in towns are at times given to sneer at the country residents as being slow, etc.. occasionally using the-epithet, "country bumpkin," etc. Well, I'm not going to say the stricture is undeserved after what I overheard the other day. Just fancy at this period telling another: 'I see they've had a dickens of an earthquake in 'Frisco!" "Oh, have they? Whin was it?" "I was reading in the weekly about it on Sunday, so I suppose it must, have been during the week !" and so on. I suppose • e had had his butcher's meat wrapped up in an old paper and somehow or other managed to notice the big head lines. I cannot otherwise understand for his having noticed the affair, and then it must have been while h e was oj the run! It's a good job for the district that a good number in it try to keep up-to-date and that an up-to-date publication liks the DAILY News can easily be obtained. Some seem to think that all they live for is to get up. milk cows, get to factory s.og at home, get to bed, and so on—no effort to improve the minds; no thought of now the out-ide world wags—and then they arc- the first to "grunt" when anything gees wrong. Such is life!
