The Archbishop of Canterbury, replying to the National Society's deputation, who urged the Lords to adhere to their amendments, said he would endeavour to see if a settlement were reached that it would be what they Vere entitled in common decency to expect. Unless teachers were allowed to give denominational instruction (the nominal offer of facilities embodied in the Government's Bill being practically worthless In urban areas), he had sufficient confidence in the honesty and reasonableness of the supporters of the Bill to believe the latter would -ee the hollowness of the proposed concessions and if they went forward, and it was now a large 'if," they were bound to make taeir offer real. No more momentous matter had ever been cea.t with in our time.
