VOLUNTEERING.
PRESENTATION TO PRIVATE A. HUMPHRIES. CHAMPION SHOT OF NORTH ISLAND. An interesting function took place at the Drill Hall last night, when two presentations were made to Private A. Humphries on attaining the distinction of being the best shot in die North Island.
Lieut.-Colonel Okcy, in a few wellchosen remarks, presented the Government's gold medal, and Lieut. J. C Da vies (vice Captain S'andish, who was indisposed) presented, on bdhalf of tile Veterans' Association, an illuminated copy of the original toll of the Taranaki Ritle Vuluniecs, who were on active service in 18G0. The illuminated 10.1 Vas beautifully executed by Sergeant L. Block, a present member of thc> corps. Private Humphries this year scored two un er the possible, iast year he even went one better by scoring one on'y below the possible. After the piesentaiion a meeting was held, when it was decided to postpone the shooting competition (on account of the show) until Thursday and Saturday, the 13th and 15th December.
Lieut. Davies donated a guinea for competition by the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers. " 11 ■»
