OLD PEOPLES' HOME.
j BOARD MEMBER AND INMATE. After the October meeting uf tne I Taranaki Hospital and Ciiaiitable Aid Board, the members paid their usual visit to the Hospital and Old • Peoples' Home. The chairman and . one or two members were standing : near the main entrance to the Home ■ with the manager, when Mr O'Sulli- , van, another member, came up and ■ complained that an old man named i Turner was insufficiently provided - with clothing. The manager strong- ' ly resented the accusation, with the ■ accompanying remark by Mr O'Sul- ' livan that he would give him a few ■ shillings himself. Mr Farrar turned up the books of the institution, and showed that clothing had been issued to the inmato only a few days previously, and took the opportunity 01 replying to the old man's complaints about his treatment, stating that he was one of the regular and constant complainants. The conversation grew warm. After the Board had left, the assistant at the Home told the manager that he had been called aside by he member mentioned, . and given a pound with which to buy something for the old man. The matter was not allowed to end there. At Monday's meeting of the Board the chairman remarked on the lact that the Board, its secretary and the Home manager had betn ignored by the member in making this donation to the inmate. Mr O'Sul'.ivan made a personal explanation, stating that the money was part of a debt owing by him to 'Turner on account of sume land transactions. He had had several lettors from New Plymouth people who had evidently taken pity on Turners condition, and wished something done for him. These people had evidently been told by the man that the speaker owed him some money. He could not see how lie chairman could accuse him of ignoring the manager, when ho made his complaint concerning clothes to the manager in front of the other members. "Now," said Mr O'Sullivan, "1 didn't like the stand he took up. lie was too excited. He ought to ;
liiivo kept cool about it." Mr Tisch said tne usual practice'.' with visitms, and ihc desired practice, was to give any contribution to the manager, or to place it in the box. Mr O'Sullivan should have adopted this ourse, instead of going t> tho assistant. Mr O'Sullivan said he had erf led the assistant at Turner's request. The chairman said that >lr O'Sullivan, its a member, should have known the manager, and ' not the assistant, was in charge. Mr O'Sullivan replied that Turner mid askt-J 10,- rnoiiev to buv underclothing, and he had mid (lie assistant he might improve Turner's lot lolho extent of £ 3 . The chairman repeated thai mis was a m<>.( improper proceeding. A medical repoit was read, stating that the initiate, despite his many coinphiinis, was j n ~o worSl , gtmV than when examined some months ago. No action was taken.
