THE STRANDED AUSTRALIAN
LIKELY TO BECOME A TOTAL WRECK. PARTICULARS OF THE MISHAP Received 20th, 10.3 p.m. Sydney, November 20. Latest advices from Port Darwin are 10 the effect that the steamer Ausralian is likely to become a total wreck. The bottom is badly holed, owing to tne grinding on the rocks. All attempts to get the water under so far have failed. Salvage seamers are expected to reach the scene this evening. The Australian lies on an outlying reef at Vashon Head, at the entrance to Port Essington, 115 miles from Port Darwin. She struck at nine o'clock on Saturday night. The weather was dirty at the time, and tne strong tide running set the vessel inshore. The "-earner Waihoi, which was in the vicinity at the time 2 took off the passengers.
INSURANCE ON THE HULL. Received 21st, 12.28 a.m. Sydney, November 20. The hull of the Australian is covered in London for over .£30,000. A VALUABLE CARGO. LOCALLY INSURED FOR £25,000 Received 21st, 1.13 a.m. Sydney, November 20. The Australian carried a large and valuable cargo, the local insurances totalling twenty-five thousand.
