Lickuark was charged with failing- to maintain his son, C. D. Uchwark, an inmate of the Nelson Industrial Schoul. An order was made against him for 8/ a week. Ruhi Rangitawa and lto Kangitawa were charged with committing a breach of the Maori Councils Amendment Act by taking intoxicating licjuor into a Maori pa.—Defendants pleaded guiliy.—Constable Hickman, who prosecuted, stated 'hat the ease arose out of a conviction against the licensee of the Oe,o Hotel for supplying liquor for consumption off the premises. The native Ruhi was anxious to put a stop to the supply of drink at the Maori pa, and sent his brother lto to obtain liquor, witti thy intention of getting a conviction against the This lie did, but by the fact of him taking the liquor into the pa committed an offence himself. The magistrate, m giving his decision, stated that 110 doubt tlvo object was a good one, as ii was very wiong to take liquor into Muaii pas, bin the defendants had gone the wrong way to work about it. Ruhi, as instigator, would be fined 20( and costs c)/, and ]t<> 10/ and costs 1)/. Jne Court was crowded with Maoris, who isteined very attentively to the magistrate's remarks.
