CONSTABLE CHARGED WITH THEFT.
COMMITTED FOR TRIAL, Per Press Association. Police constable Jeremiah O'Brien . was committed for trial today on a, charge of-stealing ,£i from a man named Coghlan. who had been ar- Jk rested for drunkenness. The prosecutor's story wa<' lato one night (October 30th), hdHfl met two constables, one of whom spoke roughly to him. Coghlan took a note of the constable's words, ha\fmg previously given the officer his name and address. O'Brien put his (Coghlan's) arm behind his back, and rushed him to the Ijck-up, where lie said he would teach him to cheek 1 the police. At the station O'Brien struck him on the jaw, and told him to stand up and bo searched. When he protestod against the assault, 0 Unen hit him again . After being searched he was put in a cell, but was sooli released. O'Brien took' possession of all his belongings which included two sovereigns) but only returned him one sovereign. Coghlan denied that he was drunk on the night stated, and had been refused a bed at a hotel because he was dirty. -
