NEW HEBRIDES CONVENTION.
STATEMENTS BY THE CIIRON ICLE. AUSTRALIAN GRIEVANCES REMOVED. COMPLICATIONS PREVENTED. Received 13th. 11.57 p.m. London, November 13. The Chronicle ><iV- the New Hebrides Convention was a nece-sary and logical sequel to the Convention of 1887. The latter, establishing a joint naval commission, was accepted as a compromise by Australian opinion, but doubtless had not satisfied a large body of Australian sentiment. The present agreement, however, prevents complications which otherwise were pos-ib e. renders dual contra operative, removes the Australian grievance, regarding French methods of acquisition of land, and [the importation of "arms and alcohol, it was hard that Sir E. Gray should be accused of humiliating Australia, when, owing to the trend of foreign policy, be had obtained concessions hitherto denied.
