FROM OUR OWN" CORRESPONDENT. The bazaar in connection with th< Cburch of England for which the ladies have been working for some time was opened on Wednesday by the Rev. Hampton in a very nice speech. The stall holders were aa follows: Xo. i stal, Mrs Middleton, assisted by Mesdames King and Des Forges; Xo. 2 stall, Mrs Feaver and Miss reaver; flower stall, Mrs Bartle and Miss Bardc; lolly sta 1, Mrs Yardlcy; Christmas tree, Miss Feaver; retreshirtentif. Mesdames Rogers, YLkers, and C.ark, and Mi-s Campbell; telegrams, Mr Wagstaff. During the afternoon the attendance was not very •arge, but fair business was done. In the evening there was a very large attendance, and a 1 the stalls did good bu-ines-. An excellent and lengthy programme was rendered as follows: —Maypole. Misses Bent, Miles, Humphries, Looney, Pros-cr, Peat and Middeton; solo, "The Carnival,'' Mi®> Campbell; solo, "Whisper and I shall hear," Mrs O'Meara; two choruses "Shine, Shine, Moon,'' and "The old banjo," were ably rendered by Miss Campbell, Mrs O'Meara, Messrs Fie'der, Humphries and Chambers. An item, entitled, "Coon Specialties,'' wa- rendered by Messrs Gordon and Belloes, and received a double encore. Several very striking and effective tab eaux were staged 4nd evokell loud appause. "The Gipsy's Warning.'' by Mioses Potier, Bent and Feaver; "Gei-ha girls,'' Misses Feaver. Cassidv and Potier; "Old Lady in shoe," by Mis Bishop and children, and "Oueen of Heart*," Mis- Peat and Messrs Feaver 1,2 J. xhe acompaniments were played by Miss Hickman and Mr Humphries whilst Mrs O'Meara sang the descriptive sung= in the tableaux. The bazaar was continued on Thursday and Friday. ,
The very heavy rain of Monday night had the meet of raising the ievel of the rivers about here to Hood mark. The contractors at the Waiau, Messrs Robrr:-on and Cave, had some timber swept away and also a pump, wliil-t tin- piles at one end ol (he bridge were also affected, rendering the bridge unsafe for very heavy traffic. As soon as the flood' abated tlvj contractors repaired the damage. Messrs Spencer and Bal ;>ntyne. school inspectors, were in Opuaake on Thursday examining both ue local public and convent schools.
