The Federal Premier (Mr Deakm) itates 'bat no reply was received to the last cable sent by tbe Commonwealth and the New Zealand Government to the Imperial authorities, with reference to the New Hebrides Convention. If the Convention had been amended in the direction desired it would have permitted Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia to make any tariS changes theythoug'nt fit with a view to developing the Hebrides by opening a market for products.

Having pledged our word to France, retreat was impossible .without substantial compensation. If the Imperial Government desire to prove their concern regarding Imperial unity, it would be better to seek «uch compensation without deTh« Times declares the Government yielded to pressure.
