NEWALL ROAD SCHOOL.
EDUCATION BOARD APPROACHED, Messrs A. Cassie and Ducker waited apon the Education Board with a request that a new school be erected on the Newall road at its junction with the Carrington road. This would serve 26 children, twelve of whom were now of school age. There was a liklihood also of some children attending from the Puniho road, which would be conveniently served by this school. The Warea school was seven miles away, and attendance there necessitated keeping and feeding two horses for each pupil. The chairman of the Warea school committee had informed him that on, account of fast-increasing attendance more accommodation and an assistant teacher would soon be required t.aere, but the building- of the new school would obviate that, by relieviapr the school of tun or twelve pupils. Mr Ducker, in answer to questions, viid tho settlers were prepared to help themselves, and if the Board could not go to the expense of erecting the Kbool, the settlers would provido a soum.
Mr Casey told the Board, in answer 1 ) a query, that his daughter might be capable of taking charge of the ( hiWren. She had been educated at Shannon, at Dunedin, and at the I'aimerston North High School, with a view to entering the teaching service. If no other teacher were available, some arrangement could possiLly be made with his daughter. The deputation having thanked the Board and retired, the matter was inferred to the inspector for his report.
Subsequently, after the inspector lad conferred with the deputation, it wax reported to the Board that the s'-ttlers wore willing to clear two acres of the school site and erect a holloing 14ft by 12ft, the Board to pay rental until the cost had been reimbursed, when the building would become the property of the Board. Mt Kennedy said that there was no hurry. It only affected four child'en who were not now attending 'cliool.
Mr Morton: Theres as much hurry for Jour as for ten. He moved that piovided the report of the inspector is favourable, the chairman be empowered to make, arrangements with tie settlers for them to erect a builclinsr on the school site set apart, the building to be runted bv the Board, and that when the amount of rent paieS shall equal the cost of the buil-j ding- it shall become the property of j tlvi Board-, and that as soon as ' the building is ready for use it lie furnished and a teacher be appointed.
