In answer to the Taranaki County Council's request, through Mr \\ . T.

jfnn:ngs, for am-Tided legislation to protect the county revenue in the case of Spotswoud .antls now unoccupied, the Minister of Lands states that it is not the intention of ihe Government to introduce legislation dealing with this question this year. Referring to Land questions at the Liberal and Labour Conference yesterday, the Hon. Mr McNab sard the Government intended to obtain the best available skill and knowledge to educalo the settlers in the best methods of treating refractoiiy soils. The Government would see the lands were not parted with. Mr Jennings has telegraphed to the Taranaki county clerk concerning the Local Authorities Subsidies Billi that the Valuer-G'encral considers the count'y subsidy will be incieased under the new measure, on the grounds that the higher average rate struck means an increase of he subsidy. Mr Jennings is of opinion tiiat the Bill will not pass this session.

One of Messrs Mat tin and Son's coal delivery carts smashed into a i<nce in Eliot street on Tuesday, splintering the palings pretty badly. The horse had become startled, and bulled. In order to dodge a man who endeavoured to stop the runaway, the horse dashed on to the footpath, with disastrous results to the fencing. The horse was stopped before any further damage had been done. Local horticulturists assure us they can almost see the growth in the gardens consequent °n the recent warm showery weather. Tuesday's consent steady rain gave the whole countryside a genuine soaking, under conditions that must confer the greatest benefit on all users of the land. The gloomy side of the picture is pointed out by an amateur gardener. ''This muggy weather will fetch the potato blight round all right.' 1 he says..'

At the dairy factory in Inglewood is set up a Hussey butter packer on trial. The machine is the property of Messrs J. B. MacKwan and Co., I'gents for the makers, the machine having' been made and patented in Australia. It is a very handy affair, -aving considerable time and labour in packing bulk butter, the whole '.vnrking', other than the shovelling in of the butler being automatically arranged. The packer needs, however, tn be made in New Zealand of our stronger timber, and slightly altered to enable it tn handle better the colder and therefore firmer butter made here.
