SUPPLYING LIQUOR TO NATIVES.
Arthur Martin, licensee of the Oeo Hotel, was charged with supplying liquor t« natives for consumption off the premises. Constable Hickman Mr Bennett appeared for the defendent, and pleaded guilty. Particulars of the ca-e were that a native named Ruhi, of Pihama sent for the liquor by his brother, and was supplied by the defendent with 2 bot ties of whiskey and 5 gallons of beer. Part of this was consumed at the pah and part (a bottle of whisky) wa« banded over to Constable Hickman. Mr Bennett stated in extenuation that the defendant was worried with sickness in the house, and in a weak moment supplied the Maoris, who were bothering him in order to get rid of them. He stated that Mr Martin was a man of excellent character, and that this was the first case
in this part of the district. The magistrate, in giving judgment, warned the natives present that in obtaining liquor in that way they were iable to be prosecuted. Owing t<> the excellent character the licensee bore he would not endorse the liccn e but would inflict a fine of £lO, and cos'S £1 6 6. BOWLING. The opening of the Bowling Club 100k place on Wednesday afternoon in perfect weather, and consequently there was an attendance of over 73 pi avers, visitors coming from Pihama, Manaia and New Plymouth. Dr Morrison, president, declared the rinljs open with a few appropriate remarks and bowling was then indulged in. The rinks are in splendid condition and some good play was shown. The following is the iesults:— Messrs Goldie, McGregor, Brennan and Lambie 29, v. Muilon, JudsGn. Clough and Lusher 9; Sunnis, Taylor. Feaver, Dudley 21, v. Wilson. Bennett, McCray and Sorrenson 18; Dr Morrison, Des Forges, C. Dea and Lambie 23. v Young Finn, Vickeis and Mac Fie 22; Malcolm. Young, Gray and O'Meara 21 v Garcia. Humphries, Armstrong, and Craw:ha\v 15. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies and greatly appreciated. Everything points to the Opunake Bowling CliVb having a ye EGMONT COUNCIL. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council was held on Friday October 12th, Mr M. Fleming presiding. Mr J. Guy was appointed foreman to supervise the concrete work on bridge construction. It was decided to accept the tender of Messrs Robertson and Cave at £367 18 6 for the Ouri Bridge. Messr- Rothery and Clarke complained that they had carted 6SO yard- of stone and had only been allowed 75 per cent, on 600 yards. There was a difference of 10 yards in two heaps between their measurement and 'he foreman's. It was resolved to got the foreman's explanation. I; was decided to call tenders for one mile of side track on the Eltham Road and for iqoo yards of boulder stone in the Rahotu riding. GENERAL. At a committee meeting of the Caledonian Society an excellent programme for the Boxing Day gathering was drawn up, more moneybeing given than on any previous occasion". •
