INTERNAL I'll ITNGS DESTROYED. Received 21st, 4.40 p.m. London, October 20. A fire broke nut in the noiili transept of Selby AJjijiy Church- and did a great deal of damage. The choir roof and internal finings, including the new reredoSj were destroyed and the belfry fell. HISTORIC PILE IN RUIN'S. DAMAGE IRREPARABLE. Received :2nd, 12.15 a.m. London, October 21. Selby Abbey is a total ruin. The fire i« attributed to carelessness of men employed repairing the organ. The damage is estimated at fifiy thousand, but is irreparable, since the Abbey was one of the finest examples of Norman architecture. (Selby Abbey waß a magnificent parish church, in different styles, which once formed part of an Abbey of Benedictine Monks, founded in 1068 by William the Conqueror. The tithe-barn of the Abbey, in which the monks stored their grain, was still in existence.)
