UNITED IRISH LEACUE.

A meeting of the New Plymouth branch of me above was held on Friday night, Ur McCleland presiding. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Buckley that a conceit be held under thi auspices of the League on Thursday niglu, November Bth. Several applications having been received fiom 'ladies desiring to become numbers of the brancn, it was decided that they be admitted as members. Mr Buckley suggested that a great asset of the League would be a literary and debating society, wilier), cf course, need 1101 be confined to the discussion of matters of a purely Irish natuie. It would be conducive to lntei osting the members in the League, and for that purpose lie had much pleasure in proposing- that a literary and debating' socieiy be formed.

Mr J. J. Sullivan said that while in perfect sympathy with the principle embodied in the proposition he left that with a slight amendment it would have his, and he be'iieved of all those present, apptoval. lie thought thai a literary and debating societywas very desirable in New Plymouth, and 1 hat being so, he had much pleasure in seconding the resolution, with the amendment (which Mr Buckley accepted), that the society be perfectly independent of the League, which it coukl help indirectly. He desired lo add to the resolution that Dr McCic'iand be elected president of the society, and that a committoe, i-he names of which he submitted to the meeting-, be formed. Rev. J. F McManus said that all over the colony literary and debating societies were doing good work intellectually and he firmly believed that the establishment of a such a society in New Plymouth wou'id be of incalculable benefit lo ihe young men of the town. He had great pleasure in associating himseif with the resolution, which was put to the meeting and cairicd unanimously.
