THE BRITISH NAVY
l • A STARTLING ASSERTION. FIRST-CLASS BATTLESHIPS ON RESERVE. Received 15th, 10659 P- m - London, October 15. The Standard makes the startling statement that the Admiralty, from motives of economy, intend before icjo/ to place six of the Majesties and two Eormidables in reserve with nucleus crews aboard, and eight Royal Sovereigns in reserve without crews, the men liberated to go to strengthen the crews of the torpedo flotillas and live in barracks. OFFICIAL DENIAL ANTICIPATED. Received iOth, 12.53 a.m. London, October 15. Earlier newspaper statements indicated some reduction in the Mediterranean fleet owing to the entente, but drafting vessels thence and elsewhere to Home waters was intended to strengthen the squadron. The Standard itself anticipates an ofneial denial of its information, or I modifications of the intention now alleged.
