THE OMATA RIDING.
The following is Koreman Kvtts' explanation of the "cxccs-ivc cost of meraling "complained of by Councillor A. George at the last meeting of the Taranaki County Council. The explanation is taken from the foreman's monthly report: — Re excessive cost of spreading metal. —The actual number of dajl- - rked from Kendall's quarry to breakwater 62, including picking up road, turning the sides to the centre, breaking big stones and raking in the stone that was on the road, an well as the stone delivered. During this time, the work of putting in four small culvris was supervised. The cost works out at 1 10 a vard, which is reasonable, a - more than half the stone delivered had to be hand broken. The'total cist wa- 4 p"r yard, as against 5 tendered. Co'esbyjs contract.—The contractor agreed to deliver 40 yards pei day. I took men to pick up the road and bieak big stone. The first day the contractor only delivered 15yds. the scmnd d.iv levels, third 30J. fourth 27yd-, fifth :syds. i-ixih j:!y<ls, seventh j6Jyds; or an average of jfjyds pei day.
