AMERICAN "UTOPIA" A FAILURE.

SYMPATHY BIT XO MONEYEOK

SIMPLE LIKE

New York. August 20. Mr I'ptnn Sinclair's scheme to found a communistic Garden of Edun near New York, where rverv man \vil ! :iave at l«-a-.t three acres a'll-J several cows, every woman will be a lady, and every child nur-ed and educated by • 11-* community, has not been received with much enthusiasm.

As a narrator of tinned meat hvr rors Mr Sinclair is the Kr cat man of the moment, but even the people who applaud his zeal <| l( . |„ u( l os t ar< , n ,„ inclined to sympathise with his prae tical proposal of reform.

Mr Sinclair's ambition is to found a colony where the cooking will b> done in a common kitchen, and where everybody will have plenty of fresh air and wholesome amusements. and above all, be sufficient;;- supplied with untainted meat and money. Circulars have been spread "broadcast asking for opinions on the pro posal, and Mr Sinclair has received thousands of favorable replies. •[•],(, trouble, however, is that Mr Sinclair forgot to make financial estimates I the cost of his scheme. One newspaper which made estimates for him thinks that £3OOO per family would cover the necessary installation expenses.

Several millionaires have been appealed to. but they do not seem inclined to *ign the necessary cheques. The result is that, while everybody is saying: "A fine idea!'' nobody is inclined to contribute to the exchequer.

America has suffered before from communistic colonies. "Brook Farm' and ihe "Xorth American Phalanx, No. i," were two historic failures in the field of Socialism. Consequently. shiewd American millionaires are not inclined to put their money into similar schemes, even to immortalise the apostle of pure beef.
