SUDDEN DEATH.

SENSATION ON HOWLING GKEKN. l'er Press Association. Wellington, October 6. A sail sudden death occurred this afternoon. Thomas Rose, assistant sectctaiy and inspector in tho Post and Telegraph Department, was engaged i n a bowling 1 match against the team of New Zealand bowlers who leave for Sydney to-night, when he suddenly collapsed, and expired in a few minutes. Death is believed to be due to heart disease. Deceased, who was in his 56;Ji year, has been an oflicer in the Department for nearly ?•; years, and was highly respected throughout the colony. Wellington, October 7. Mr Rose's death created a great sensation on the bowling green. He had been chosen to skip a rink from tl'.c Thorndon Club against a Christchurch rink skipped by Mr S. Manning. The skips had gone down to the northern end of the rink to play the final bowls of the head. Mr Rose played his first of two bowls, and sat down on the bank to watch his opponent play. Suddenly he started forward, then feU quietly back on to the asphalt path. The surrounding players rushed to his assistance, and a couple of medical men who were present tried to induce artificial respiration. but without effect. Deceased never spoke after the seizure, lie died of heart failure, and a certificate to that effect was given. Mr 1 Rose was 59 years of age. He had been Chief Inspector in the Postal Department since 1873.
