The following is a copy of a memorandum 110111 the undcr-S'-cmary tor Crown lands to the Education Department relative to the possibility of the State Nurseries being able to piovide trees for planting on school giounds. The Secretary for Education in forwarding the memo, to the Taranaki Education Board, said the Department touid not undertake to communicate with school committees in the matter or to provide any funds that may be required by the Lands Department in connection with the scheme. Tho Board decided to circularise tho committees. The rnemoranudum, inter alia, stated: l-'rom time to time numerous applications are being received from School (.'oinmiuecs, asking that they be supplied with trees for planting en the school grounds or around the teachers' residences, and as it is very necessary that tree planting should be encouraged, the lion. Minister of Lands is quite willing that suitable trees, ornamental or otherwise, should la- grown at the Stale Nurseries in meet ihe requirements or School Commitees and school teachers, provid<d that orders are given in advance* so that ihe necessary seeds may be procured and the trees grown there[riim in the Slate Nurseries. It will thcrci'oi'C !;•'■ necessary for your Deparinient to furnish every venr a list of the i ices required in, say, two years' lime.
