STRATFORD.
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Some two months ago a Druid Lodge was started in StratfoTd through the instrumentality of (lie Eltham Druid Lodge, and the hearty cooperation of Mr K. A. Pcarce. The lodge opened with a membership of
22, which has now increased to 30. At the usual fortnightly meetings held ill tin; Foresters' Hall last Tuesday evening, 20 members were present the Arch Druid Mr J. J. Pickett presiding. One new member was ballotted for, two members were initiated and two were proposed. For the vacancy on the Borough Council, caused through the resignation of Mr Ralfe, Messrs William Patrick Kirkwood and Jonas Masters have been nominated. The poll takes place on Wednesday next, the hours of polling being from y a.m. to 7 p.m. On Wednesday information was received by the. police that a Midhirst resident had shown signs of mental I aberration and Constable Belacli 011 making enquiries at Midhirst deemed it advisable to take the man to Stratford and have him medically exam ined. On Wednesday afternoon Dr Menzies and Dr Dillon Carberry submitted their report to Messrs J .Sexton, J. Masters, and S. Ward, J.'sP., who committed him to I'orirua Asylum. The unfortunate man had recently been released from that institution and much sympathy is felt for his wife and fanwy. There are 11 01 a family and only two are o;d enough to assist their mother. The Midhirst people arc usually very prompt in giving assistance to deserving cases sue.i as this, and i would suggest that a benefit conceit should bo arranged for as 1 am sure it would be well patronised. 1 trust that some of the leading people will act 011 this suggestion.
i am pieased indeed to report that Miss ivy Clayton, who was very seriously injured some months ago by being thrown from her horse, is now so far recovered that she was able to leave by the mail train last night (T'auistlay) for New Plymouth, en route for Tauranga, will']e her father now resides. So serious were Miss Clayton's injuries that for some iimo little hope was given of her life beingsaved, and Dr Dillon-Carberry, her medical attendant, is to be congratulated 011 the success that has attended his efforts. A weil attended and most enthusiastic meeting of the Stratford Oppos it ion party was held in the Arcade Rooms on Thursday night, when Mr R. Martin, the Organising Agent of the Opposition, delivered an address. It was decided to form in Stratford a branch of Hie Political Reform League. Goods are still being taken by mistake from the Douglas-road railway station. The other day a carter took by mistake a sack of wheat to Whangamomona, but had to cart it back
again to Douglas. An information has been laic against a local cattle-drover by Mi C. J. Wickham, Inspector of Crueity to animals, charging him with neglecting to provide proper and sufficient food to a 1110b of 40 cattle.
