S'-vere anti-negro riots occurred at Atlanta owing to the neuspapers announcing five assaults on white women on Saturday. The police were powerless and the Mayor's appeal* were disregarded, whi'e fire engines vainly dren.hed ihe rioters. Trams were searched and negro passscngers killed or badly beaten, even when escorting negresses. One negro was stabbed to death on ihe Post Office steps. The militia finally quietened the city, but were powerless outside. and it is feared thirty innocent negroes have been killed. The hospitals are fu'l of wounded, manv mortally.
