NAVAL DEFENCE.
THE AUSTRALIAN NAVV PROPOSAL. SUPPORTED BY LORD 15RASSEV. Received 23rd, 4.44 p.m. London, September 22. Lord B: as-ey, presiding at the inaugural dinner of the Grocers' Exhibition, said it was useless for the Motherland to expect her daughter States to subsidise the Imperial Navy. Australia desired an Austra iian navy, remaining in local waters in time of peace, and placed at the Empire's service in war time.
Australia ought to begin with a small, efficient, permanent force of men, backed by strong, well-trained reserves and ought first only to build destroyers and submarines. As .lie naval organisation expanded, the Motherland could supply either bygift or loan cruisers and combatant vessels from the Home reserve.
