The Grantham railway disaster resulted in 12 deaths, including Philipson, a director of the North Eastern j Railway. Sixteen passengers were I injured, eight severely. All the signals were against the train, which ran through the points on the Nottingham line, and, being < n a sharp curve, was derailed in like manner to the Salisbury accident. Forty mail bags were burned. The brakes were in perfect order. It is supposd the connecting rod broke approaching Grantham or the driver forgot to stop. The wieckage was ablaze for two hours. A PROBABLE SOLUTION. VACUUM BRAKE UNCONNECTED. Received 2 ist, to. 56 p.m. London, September 21. The fireman on the train shouted wildly whi e traversing Grantham. The Times says it was his duty, when the engines were changed ;.t Peterborough, to see that the vacuum brake wa? attached to the engine before the train was restarted. If that was neglected, the apparent inability to stop at Grantham is easily explained.
