STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) 1 am informed by Mr P. J. White, of the senior partner of Messrs White and Son, mail contractors from Stratford to Wliangamomona, that tin; new mail service is to provide for three mails weekly to and from Wliangamomona. This is a b on that will be highly appreciated by Whanga people, and testifies that Whanga and the districts beyond are becoming rapidly populated. Messrs White and Son have had the mail contract for the past four years, and great improvements have been made m the itinerary since they began, New coaches have been built so that the comfort of passengers is well studied. Notwithstanding the wreiched state of t; lc roads at times the contractors have always carried the mails to time, clear evidence that the service must be one of the most up-toi date in the colony. On one occasion, 3 years ago, Mr. P. J. White had to tramp 32 mi:es with 170 lbs of mail matter on his back. Besides carrying the mail to Whanga from Stratford, Messrs White and Son have also the contract for the mail to Tatu. 40 miles beyond Wliangamomona. Much interest is being taken in the coming election for the vacancy in the Borough Council, the candidates being- Messrs W. I', Kirkwood, of the County Hotel, and Jonas Masters storekeeper. The voting is likely to be heavy, as the candidates may be said to represent license and no license. Mr Masters has previous experience as a councillor, but Mr Kirkwood has not, although at last election he was unsuccessful by only a lew votes. There is no doubt, however, that Mr Kirkwood would prove a valuable member of the Council, as he takes deep interest in the welfare of the town.
Ihe StraWord Domain Board deserves credit for the manner in which it lo.iks after Victoria Park tflnd King Edward Park. Notwithstand the small amount the Board has at its disposal for the up-keep of these grounds, they receive great attention, and it behoves everyone to assist" the Board in protecting them. Yesterday I noticed about 100 boys of the Stratford schcpl p'aying football in Victoria Park, and when the school bell sounded for the assembly after lunch, with the exception of two of the boys, who left the ground by the gate, the others crawled through ■ r climbed over the fences. I noticed that many of the w'ires were broken or loose, and that cannot be wondered at, if the same occurrence takes place daily. Again, the park presented a most untidy appearance, being littered with the papers in which the boys had brought their lunch. Surely, if the school is to use the park as a playground, one of the teachers should be present to supervise, if supervision is necessary. Mes'srs J. and T. Hayes, who have so successfully managed the Crown Stables, have sod out their interests to Mr J. R. Jones, formerly of Puni whakau, who is well known in the district, and who will no doubt retain the patronage bestowed on bis predecessors.
