L'pwatas of one hundred were arov. ii>'d in two hours during a tcrriac lypiioLn at Hongkong. The damage is estimated at several millions of do.lars. Eight steamers were stranded and several fouudereJ. Numrous collisions occurred. An American vesssel, the S. Hitchcock. was cast high and dry on the Koxvloon sea wall.
By means < f a tug constantly tow ing, the liner Empress of Japan was saved.
The s'oop Phoenix and the Frencl destroyer Erancisrjue were wrecked. AX UNHERALDED VISITATION VESSELS PILED UP IN THE STREETS. SEVERAL GUNBOATS DAMAGED. HUNDREDS OK NATIVES DROWNED. Received lQth, 11.35 p.m. Hongkong, Sept. ig. Several gunboats were damaged. The French destroyer Fronde collided with another vessel and 20 per shed.
There was no warning of the com ing storm. Liners, junks, sampans, and ferry boats were suddenly piled up in the streets. The chief' fatalities were amongst the natives, hun drcds in their boats sinking in the Canton River.
