TONGAPORUTU.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Two Maoris have been drowned in the Tnng'iporutu river, Wi Au's wahine nud his boy, eight years of age. Their bodies have not yet been found. A posse of Natives are dragging the river and watching the beach, so far without success. They are of opinion that Putiki, where they fell in, is the headquarters of "Taipo." 3 ihmk they are not far out. The weather is excellent; beautiful blossom, beautiful grass, hut execrable roads. The Waitara launch keeps starvation out of the place |m defiance of the Clifton County Council's attempt to starve us.
The Government arc still making lengths of the six feet pig tracts towards Maugtiroa and Whangauiomona.
Mr F. M. Grayling, builder, New Plymouth, who is goiug to build a few small bridges and culverts at Okau, bad some muddy experience coming through from Urit-i. He managed the mam road to the Onga Ongn junction but the C.C.C. road to Putiki pulled him up. He emptied the express on to pack horses, and got pulled through several of the morasses by Mr F. Katteubury, who had two heavy draught horses, and after five hours' coil he unyoked, having traversed one mile and one quarter. Milking has hardly commenced yet, but bush-feUing is in full swing. A considerable area is to be brought down this season. Land is beginning to bnoin—oil rights and what not. One or two have sold lately aud other sales are pending. Farmers arc getting married too. A good sign. Two or three have so done, and report lialli it that others will follow suit shortly.
