THE MINING LOCK-OUT.
THE MINERS' ULTIMATUM. SITUATION SERIOUS. Received 12th, Q. 44 p.m. Newcastle, September 12. The committee of management of the Colliery Employees' Federation discussed the Maitland trouble, also the Newcastle miners' demand for an increased hewing rate, and resolved that in the event of no satisfactory, settlement of the "dog-watch" dispute, and failing a definite promise to increase by 8d a ton the hewing rate, to date from January Ist next being obtained before Saturday, an aggregate meeting of miners be held on Monday next to advocate cessation of work at the borehole and fipper seams. This practically means all mines in both the Maitland and Newcastle districts. It was alsoi decided to ask a conference with the owners on Saturday. Meantime resolutions will be submitted to the miners' lodges for endorsement. The owners meet at Sydney •to morrow to discuss the situation. It is understood they are determined to resist the demands.
