BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Netv Plymouth Borough Council hftd a rather shorter meeting than usual on Monday night, adjourning about a past len o'clock. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. Doekrill), and Councillors Bellringer, Brooking, Browne, Collis, Hut elien, Montcath, Stohr, and Wilson. CONDEMNED CATTLE.

Mr Mnrtiigh waited 011 the Council, and complained that lie could get no compensation for his stock condemned at the abattoirs and sent to Messrs Sole Bros.' boiling-down works. Shaw asked it the Council was in a position to supply electric light to his residence in Devon road and tlio adjoining cottage fronting Belt road. Jlr Davies, he said, was also willing to take the light; and residents near the corner of Devon and Belt roads were desirous of arranging for a street light. Mr Shaw added he felt certain the Belt road extension would soon prove a profitable investment for the Council.

The Electric Light Committee's report, recommending the extension of the lighting system to the breakwater, was adopted. A FEAKFUL ODOUR. Mr K. Coleman complained of the "fearful odour" arising from side channels in Gill and Eliot Streets.— Referred to the sanitary engineer. A SMOKE NUISANCE. A number of owners and tenants of ■ property in Gill street asked the Council to ascertain what power it had to jet rid of the " abominable nuisance" caused by (he smoke from the steam laundry.—Referred S to the borough solicitor. BUILDING BY-LAWS. Messrs Govett A Quiiliam submitted plans of proposed alterations to their offices, and asked to be allowed to make the additions in wood.—Jieferred to the Works Committee. A TALL ORDER. Mr Walter Coker asked the Council to open out Fillis street at its earliest convenience, in order to obtain access to sections 1088-I).—The foreman will report. STOini WATER NUISANCE. Mr . F. Hooker complained thai the surface water from King street, at its inter-sectiou with Eguiont street, Hooded his office. —Cr. Brooking said tlie tr uible was Mr Hooker's own fault. —Referred to the foreman for his report to the Works Committee. GAS MAINS. The New Plymouth Gas Company gave notice that it was proposed to break up Pendarves street for the purpose of supplying gas to the Technical School, A councillor (sotto voice): Why don't they tak? the electric light. Several residents of \ogcltown wrote asking the Council to extend the water-main from the Mill road, in order to supply water to houses on Victoria road and Shortland street, Yogeltown, —The engineer will report. MISCELLANEOUS. The Council declined to take any action on the letter of the I'almcrston Chamber of Commerce concerning the purchase by the Government of the Welliugtou-Manawalu railway. Mrs Douglas will be informed that the building by-laws must be adhered to in the proposed alterations to her premises in Devon street. ENGINEER'S REPORT.
