Th" Harvard and Cambridge Uni versiti.-s' beat race attracted a record attendance, including thousands of Americans. The enthusiasm was intense. Cambridge won the toss and chose the Surrey side of the r iver. The boats got away at 4.29. Cambridge were the smarter at the ■ art. and were socn leading by a hngth. Parsing Crabtrep Reach, nbridge increased the lead two and a-quarter lengths. Harvard, putting on a spurt, shot Hammer smith Bridge a length and a-quarter in the wake of Cambridge, but the effort was valuless, though Harvard rowed a dogged, stern chase. Cam bridge continued to improve theii position, leading by three lengths at Barnes", and eventually winning by two in n)min iSsec.
